Finding the Right Hair Salon for Indian & South Asian Hair in Naperville

By Nandita, Owner & Aveda-Certified Stylist at Charizma Salon & Spa, Naperville

Why Finding the Right Salon for Indian Hair Is So Hard

If you have South Asian or Indian hair, you have probably had this experience: you sit down at a salon, explain what you want, and leave with a haircut that looks nothing like what you asked for. The stylist used the right technique — for fine, straight European hair — but your thick, dense desi hair behaved completely differently, and the result was disappointing.

It is not the stylist's fault, necessarily. Indian and South Asian hair has specific characteristics that require a different approach. And most salons, regardless of how skilled their stylists are, simply do not have regular experience with these textures.

That is exactly why I started Charizma Salon.

What Makes Indian & South Asian Hair Different

South Asian hair — whether Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, or from other South Asian backgrounds — typically has several distinct characteristics:

  • High density. South Asian hair tends to have more hairs per square inch than many other hair types. This means there is simply more hair to work with — and more bulk to manage.
  • Thick individual strands. Each hair strand itself is often thicker in diameter, which contributes to the overall heaviness of the hair.
  • Straight to slightly wavy texture. Most South Asian hair grows in straight or with a gentle wave — but the density means it can appear flat or heavy when cut incorrectly.
  • Strong growth patterns. The way South Asian hair grows means that certain areas — particularly the crown — can resist styling if not cut with the growth direction in mind.
  • Specific color considerations. Dark, pigment-rich Indian hair requires different lightening approaches for color services like balayage or highlights — techniques that work on lighter hair without these steps can result in brassiness or uneven lift.

What to Look for in a Salon for South Asian Hair

When choosing a salon for Indian or South Asian hair, here are the things that actually matter:

Experience with the texture. Ask directly: does this stylist regularly cut South Asian or Indian hair? A stylist who cuts this texture frequently will have developed instincts for how the hair behaves — how it falls, how it responds to layering, where to remove weight.

Consultation first, scissors second. A good stylist will ask questions and look at your hair carefully before picking up any tools. They should ask about your lifestyle, how you style your hair at home, and what has not worked for you before.

Understanding of layering for thick hair. The right layers can transform thick South Asian hair — reducing bulk, adding movement, and creating shape. The wrong layers (or no layers) can leave the hair looking flat, triangular, or shapeless. Knowing exactly where and how to layer thick hair is a specific skill.

Color expertise for dark hair. If you want color services on dark Indian hair, your stylist needs to understand the multi-step lightening process required to achieve the result you want without damage or unwanted warmth.

Why Charizma Salon & Spa

I am Nandita, the owner and sole stylist at Charizma Salon & Spa in Naperville. I am a certified licensed cosmetologist trained at the Aveda Institute. And I am South Asian myself — I grew up with Indian hair, I understand it from personal experience as well as professional training, and the majority of my clients have South Asian hair textures.

My specialties include:

  • Butterfly haircuts and layered cuts tailored to thick, dense Indian hair — adding movement and shape while keeping the length
  • Traditional Indian haircuts — classic styles suited to South Asian face shapes and hair types
  • Balayage and highlights on dark hair — carefully formulated to achieve a natural gradient without brassiness
  • Threading — eyebrow and facial threading using the traditional cotton thread method, a service deeply rooted in South Asian beauty culture
  • Herbal facials — using VLCC and Shahnaz products trusted for South Asian skin tones

My goal is simple: to make every client feel genuinely beautiful and leave with a result they love. I take the time to understand what you want, and I do not cut until you are confident we are on the same page.
